Of the 35,657,131,235 different 'holey' 6-piece burrs,
only this one requires this many moves. The next closest
burr requires 10-moves to remove the first piece. A complete
computer analysis of these burrs was run from 1987-1990
by Bill Cutler with assistance from about 10 other people.
Love's Dozen was discovered by Bruce Love before the
computer programs were run.
There are many ways to assemble the pieces into a 6-piece
burr, but only one of them requires 12 moves. The 12-move
solution is the only one in which the two pieces of each
wood type are parallel to each other.
Frank Worrell suggested using 3 woods to enforce the 12-move solution. |
